What is a VPN? And why do I want one for China?

For those who have never visited mainland China previously (i.e not Hong Kong or Macau) you could be shocked when you’re there and find out that you can not gain access to many websites that you enjoy and use daily. This is due to the so-called “Great Firewall” of China – a national imposed internet filtering system that confines the access of some sites when you’re in China. Well over 2600 major websites are blocked in China. Examples of these blocked sites can include:

Google.com
Gmail.com
Facebook.com
Youtube.com
Yahoo.com
Twitter.com
Vimeo.com
Soundcloud.com
WordPress.com
Blogspot.com
Wikileaks.com
Listing of other websites

Recently the UK’s most read online newspaper, The Guardian, has also been added to the block list.

As you can imagine, not being able to use the preceding sites symbolizes an incredible hindrance.

The majority of us go with these websites for our social connection, management of tasks, work, and communication. You may endure a couple days without using these web sites, but for people who consider residing in China for an extended period of time, we need a means to fix this problem- our livelihood, interactions, and sanity depend on it!
